One of the themes from the story we read in class today was that the master of your body does not have to be the master of your mind. Please keep this theme in mind as we begin to examine the life of of Anne Frank.

Check out this song and video by Tom Waits. It's called "Come on Up to the House." See if you can relate it to The People Could Fly, the story we read in class today.

  1. I think this song does relate to the story we read. Because if you want to be free or something, is no good to cry, instead, you should go to your house.

  2. The house in the song is, I believe, not a house here on earth. The lyrics describe a person who feels like "this earth is not my home" -- a world so full of suffering and pain that it is almost impossible to endure. The house in the song is the house in heaven, God's house. I selected this song because it's a great song and it relates to the story, "When They Could Fly." A student mentioned in class the possibility that the slaves who "flew" were actually dying. They were being set free from there captivity by death. This is a powerful THEME in African-American spirituals. This song is an example of this kind of spiritual.

  3. This song relates with the story because it talks about how the people looks for freedom, just as the African slaves of the story. :)
